Whenever I hear my dad say ‘weather girl’ I correct him with ‘meteorologist’

I also don’t like it when they say “lady”. It often comes across as a bit patronising.

A male director referred to me as a girl earlier this week - I’m 37 - to which I also said A girl? Pretty sure I’m a woman! Cue silence…

I often say “female what? Cat? Dog? Dolphin?” when people refer to a woman or women as a female/s. It’s very rare that men are referred to collectively as “males”

totally agree, albeit I know I'm guilty of doing this, but to myself. I still think of myself as a girl at work, but I'm 41. I guess the imposter syndrome runs deep!

My love my dad and I know he means know harm but I’ve noticed he did this with the women he worked with. Once to a woman his age/ older than him! I started calling him out and so did my mum and sister. It’s the little things where subconsciously, misogyny seeps through

I work at Board level. Whenever a man calls a mixed group/meeting to attention by saying ‘ok guys let’s get started’, I’ll back him up by saying ‘yes, let’s get started ladies’. Because wtf is ‘guys’ supposed to be gender neutral if girls/ladies isn’t? Also… separately… I once refused to pay an architect for the plans they’d drafted bc they used graphics of men on every floor to demonstrate average height and ‘head clearance’. I made it very clear that as I am a woman and the sole owner of the property being renovated, that if they wanted to be paid or appointed they would need to show me plans that are relevant to me, not to some bs ‘average man’ client. They refused. It made it very easy to turn down their proposal!

I picked my boss up on this recently, I asked how the latest round of interviews had gone.
Boss: "oh the female did really well"
Me: "the female what?"
Boss: "erm, I guess candidate.."
Me: "so a woman then?"

Totally with you. Language is essential. And very telling. (One of my big hates is: “Okay, guys” or “well done, guys”, it’s a low key way to erase women’s efforts.)

I often get called the “marketing girl” by sales (not just older men either!) - they mean well but it’s instinctive. Drives me nuts! 🤣

I do this too! I can’t stop myself. I also with my boys always say- let’s check if it’s bin men today or bin ladies! Or let’s check if the pilots are men or women for our flight! So they don’t ever assume

When there’s a female in a senior role and men assume it’s a man so say something about it being or speaking to ‘him’😬😡

I have this difficulty at work - I work with 'young people' who are often over the age of 18. So when we refer to them as young it feels normal to say 'boy' or 'girl' but part of my work is getting people to understand that, just because they are young doesn't mean their experience isn't important and as such we need to use appropriate language to respect them. I 100% get this!

This is a really good point, thankfully not something I do as my mum taught me better but I'm not sure I pull others up when they do either. I'll try from now on
