Leopard 2HEL 🇬🇷🇩🇪 | Edit Leopard 2 HEL (Hellenic) is a Greek modification of the German Leopard 2A6 main battle tank, developed specifically to meet the requirements of the Hellenic Army. Today, it remains one of the most advanced and heavily protected variants in the Leopard 2 family. In the early 2000s, Greece held a major tender for a new MBT, during which the Leopard 2A6 outperformed competitors (including the American M1A2 Abrams, French Leclerc, and Ukrainian T-84U). In 2003, a contract was signed for 170 vehicles, the majority of which were assembled under license directly in Greece by ELBO (Hellenic Vehicle Industry). Main Specifications and Features | Parameter | Value / Description | |---|---| | Combat Weight | ~62.5 metric tons | | Crew | 4 (commander, gunner, loader, driver) | | Main Gun | 120mm Rheinmetall L/55 smoothbore gun | | Engine | MTU MB 873 Ka-501 diesel (1,500 hp) | | Top Speed | Up to 68 km/h on paved roads, ~45 km/h cross-country | | Range | ~500 km | Key Improvements of the HEL Variant * L/55 Long-Barrel Gun * The barrel length was increased by 1.32 meters (55 calibers compared to 44 on the Leopard 2A5). This provides a significantly higher muzzle velocity and improves the armor-penetrating performance of APFSDS rounds such as DM53 / DM63. * Enhanced Armor Protection * The turret front features additional wedge-shaped composite armor modules (similar to the 2A6). * Turret roof armor was specifically reinforced to protect against top-attack threats (such as smart munitions, top-attack ATGMs, and cluster submunitions). * Digital FCS and Communications * Equipped with the Greek INACHOS tactical command and control system for real-time battlefield data sharing. * Both the gunner’s primary sight and the commander’s panoramic sight feature 3rd-generation thermal imagers (Ophelios / PERI-R17A2). * Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) * An auxiliary power unit rated at 17 kW is integrated into the rear hull. It powers all electronic systems, optics, and air conditioning while the main engine is shut down (

It powers all electronic systems, optics, and air conditioning while the main engine is shut down ("silent watch" mode). * Climate Control System * Tailored to Greece's hot climate, the tank is equipped with a high-capacity air conditioning system to cool both the crew compartment and the electronics. Current Status All 170 Leopard 2 HEL tanks are in service with Greek armored divisions (predominantly deployed in the Evros region near the eastern border). Alongside previously acquired Leopard 2A4s (around 183 vehicles), they form the backbone of the Hellenic Army's armored strike force. #tank #tankedit #military #militaryedit #tanks #editmilitary
