@kendraworth: Here's exactly what I do when it my 25 MO toddler tries to hit: 1️⃣ I gently hold her arms. Calm voice, no yelling. I'm not punishing her, I'm just not letting her hit. 2️⃣ I redirect: "Hands by your side." That gives her something she CAN do with her body instead of telling her what she CAN’T do (negative directions are very confusing for toddlers) 3️⃣ I figure out what she actually wants. Hitting is almost always communication frustration because toddlers don't have the words or the impulse control yet, so their hands go flying. 4️⃣ I show her the better way: "Can you ask me nicely? Say _____” 5️⃣ When she asks nicely, she gets her objective. That's how she learns asking nicely works and hitting doesn't. 6️⃣ Then, once she's calm, we practice gentle hands, and I go ALL OUT. Screaming, cheering, giving her the biggest reaction you've ever seen Here's why that last part matters so much: a lot of the time, kids hit because they're looking for a big reaction. So I reverse it. The boring, calm response goes to the hitting. The huge, exciting reaction goes to the gentle hands. This won't fix it in one day. You'll probably do this 100 times. But every rep is teaching her brain a new pathway, and that's my whole goal. I did the same thing with my older girls who are now 4 & 6 and they NEVER hit and are so emotionally regulated for their age. Save this for the next time those little hands start swinging! #toddlerbehavior #gentleparenting #toddlerhitting #creatorsearchinsights #realityofbeingamom toddler hitting how to stop toddler hitting toddler hits mom what to do when toddler hits gentle parenting toddler toddler behavior tips toddler tantrums positive reinforcement toddler gentle hands 2 year old hitting toddler aggression Kendra worth viral toddler

Great job. The only thing I would say is get down to her level when adressing things and talking to her when possible

with the reaction to gentle touches, should you do that when they gently touch pets? I dont want to startle the pets for being good at the same time 😅

Great approach! I was also a “butter baby” and would sneak butter before my parents woke up 😳 learned latter fat is great for the brain and babies crave butter because it’s a fat. Extra butter on the toast for baby!

this is SUCH a helpful video. love seeing actual examples in the moment. There are so many videos that tell you what to do, but it's hard doing those things in a moment of high stress with a toddler. helpful!

this video is making me feel so much better because I feel like with my two-year-old’s, most recent uptick and tantrums, it has somehow been a reflection of poor parenting on my part, even though i know that’s not true. I feel like we’ve been experiencing not being able to go to the stores, so I’ve decided to do all grocery shopping alone, and only take her out to low steak stores that if she starts throwing a tantrum or something, we can leave. But it’s getting to the point where she hates sitting in the cart, if she takes a kids toy and I redirect she melts down. Like the intensity of her meltdowns are jarring, they’re usually over quick but I’m like woah. I keep telling myself she needs to experience dis regulation to learn how to regulate and it’s my job to co regulate and also teach her how to regulate. She’s a biter when she’s mad, I’m like what the heck bro 😭😂

Ugh thank you! I needed to see this so I can start with my almost 2yr old. When he gets upset he wants to hit or bit and it takes me a while to calm him down. Thank you so much for the example!

I’d love to know how you handle the absolutely ridiculous ones. My son is 19 months now and very verbal but also does this “want xxx” but then gets mad when I give him what he asks for??? I have nanny toddler experience and actually parenting style is a lot like yours but sometimes I think i over communicate “bro you see why that’s confusing you said you want this but you don’t” and I fear for more ridiculous nonsense in the year ahead… help!

Mine is 19 months and is hitting mostly to try to play but I feel like he’s not ready for actual conversation about it so we say “gentle hands”, model it, set him down when he hits, and sometimes put his hands to his side for him when he is doing it repeatedly and we can’t put him down. But it still feels like a game to him. He loves to show us his gentle hands and give kisses after but it doesn’t seem to be preventing it at all 🤦‍♀️Any other ideas?
