The Stuka siren, known in German as the "Jericho-Trompete" ("Trumpet of Jericho"), was a device fitted to some German Junkers Ju 87 Stuka dive bombers during World War II. The siren was not primarily intended to improve the aircraft's performance. Instead, its main purpose was psychological warfare. During a dive, the airflow spun a small propeller connected to a siren, producing a loud, high-pitched, terrifying wail. The sound was designed to spread fear and panic among soldiers and civilians on the ground even before the bombs struck. Despite its psychological impact, the siren had several drawbacks. It increased aerodynamic drag, slightly reducing the aircraft's speed. It also made the Stuka easier to detect from a greater distance. Over time, its effectiveness declined as Allied forces became accustomed to the sound. Beginning in 1943, many Stukas were operated without these sirens. Pilots could still create a similar effect during high-speed dives, as the rushing air naturally produced a loud whistling noise. #ww2 #war #History #Stuka
