@tyler_therealtor: Highland Park was once one of LA’s most desirable suburbs. More than a century later, it was named one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world. But what happened in between? 🏡 Developed during LA’s 1880s real estate boom, Highland Park was known for its scenic hillsides, streetcars, and Victorian and Craftsman homes. But freeway construction, white flight, and decades of disinvestment transformed the neighborhood. Mexican American families built thriving communities and cultural institutions, even as parts of Highland Park struggled with gang violence and crime. By the 2000s, crime was declining and new galleries, restaurants, music venues, and businesses were moving in. And today, Highland Park is one of LA’s most vibrant cultural hubs. But its revival has also brought rising housing costs and concerns about displacement. So was Highland Park revived, or gentrified? Or both? gentrified. hlp has always been rich with culture, community, and history. just bc it’s trendy now with all these cafes and expensive boutiques- doesn’t mean it wasn’t vibrant before. lots of folks are displaced now from their homes.

Gentrification!! I had a beautiful place I lived in for 18 years. I was paying $400 a month when I moved in and $700 when I was moved out so the rent can triple!! 🤬

Highland Park is cool but the bar must be low if it's being called one of the coolest in the world. It needs alot of improvement

I know it was so cheap living over there. You get a two bedroom in the early 2000s for under $600 and now the rents are high. The gold line came in or the trendy shops started coming in and everything goes sky high it used to be affordable to live right there streets are clean, quiet if you're looking for a you can always find it

The Avenues are considered a legacy hood : Forever hood display, gentrification, or gang injunction laws. The numbers have dwindled physically in the neighborhood because of the gentrification. But their power is strong within the prison system and other organized levels. Many members are in higher power now. Gentrification is probably the best thing to ever happen to Highland Park. During the 80s and 90s, the avenues and Highland Park neighborhood had a stronghold on the entire area whether it's trafficking business, taxing, and territorial claim. A lot of things have changed and for the better. Even old OG's who continue to live there wouldn't want to move anywhere else at this point. It's a great night atmosphere whether you want to hang out on York or Figueroa it has become adult Disneyland. In the 90s specifically the early 90s it was extremely dangerous. There are still crime and violence in the area, but a lot of it has to do with new tiny little crew and neighborhood disputes. The war between Highland Park and avenues is on the walls made with graffiti. My prediction as gentrification grows. They're gonna have to end up joining forces. And somehow make a legitimate business together to keep their legacy. If Dogtown can do it. If other neighborhood entities can become a business so can they. Has the area become hipster? Yes. It's the Mecca. Brooklyn has nothing on NELA

Dude, as soon as you said art, galleries and coffee shops I absolutely knew it was the Gay’s that started the move-in spilling over from West Hollywood. Gay folks always go to run down neighborhoods and revive them. You gotta give credit to the gay folks cause they do magnificent fantastic work revitalizing.
