My family still does hope chests, a chest full of practical items like blankets and kitchen supplies to set up a household. But I got mine when I moved out on my own, it was actually really helpful- I remember some older relatives being huffy about it because it wasn’t saved until I got married 😅 but by the time I was married I’d already lived on my own for seven years and had all that stuff!

If I rember right some gulf countries actually have state assistance services for dowries especially in ultra wealthy states were the families are expected to coff up thousands or millions of dollars for dowry’s/bride price
