@theehazeldomain: Replying to @RubyRedux one of the hard drives physically fails once every four years or so, at which point I replace it with a larger one.
entire companies genuinely have worse backup strategies than you 😭
respect tho I'd love a home lab like that

3-2-1 rule. 3 copies, in 2 different media sources, in one remote location. You are checking the 3, let's say you pass the 2, but what if you are at gunpoint to open the fireproof seif? 😅

You: "I am insane."
Me: "There's no way it's THAT bad. I'm sure it's just a little involved."
You: *the rest of the video*

After watching a fellow engineer go practically suicidal after losing a year’s worth of project files after discovering the companies’s nightly backup optical drive was blank, I get it. Only after seeing something like that do you really understand.

This is amazing! But as Monica Geller said, you need to store a copy in a fireproof box and keep it at least 100 yards away from the original haha.

Pretty Solid. Only room for improvement I can see is using syncthing (open source, not cloud) to mirror your documents and close the window for same day data loss. Also, wrapping the case with your SSD in tinfoil can help protect from stray charged particles

hazel what the fuck but also thats objectively very hot of you ngl 😤 I just have that thing where I have a graveyard of external hard-drives that mirrored their predecessor but came with more space so id fill it up with new stuff and repeat ad nauseum. I had two data recoveries my mom paid for as a kid and they were like 2k each and we did NOT have that money but she made it work [Crying]💕 did you have similar trauma or were you just built like that from the start?

You lowkey need an offsite backup. I upload aes256 encrypted blobs to an s3 bucket as my non destructive backup.

How are you having hard drive failures every four years? All my hard drives are 10+ years old, have I just gotten lucky?
