College Board is competing with dual enrollment at the school level. If they can make the test pass rate more attainable, students will continue to take AP over dual, thus continuing to make money 🫠

AP ph physics has gone through a number of changes over the years and is arguably easier. However , it was also arguably unreasonably difficult in prior years. But there are two different important changes to consider. One change was in the length of the exam and the breadth of the curriculum and what students were expected to learn and how quickly they needed to do the exam. That has become easier.I would say , and that's a good thing. The murkier question is , if the assessing of the actual questions has also become easier which I don't think would be a good thing and I really can't tell that , because I haven't scored them for many years. Having scored the last couple of years.I can say that There are some examples on sort of both sides of the argument where there are people who seem to have a pretty poor understanding but can still perhaps get a decent score. And vice versa , people who can get a low score despite having a reasonably good understanding , I think. The exam has improved in its ability to really check if students physically understand what's happening in addition to being able to make rigorous calculations.

I was an AP student in the 1990s and have taught AP classes since 2010s. The tests have changed, the amount students who take the tests. College Board is a cash grab.

As an AP teacher, I think it’s also that more students are passing but less are getting 5s. Getting a 5 now seems so challenging for my students and the 5 is what most colleges require now for credit.

unfortunately this will probably result in colleges either raising the bar for credit and only accepting 5s. Or they might stop accepting them entirely. Both are bad because now students will be punished for minor errors on exams or there’s less opportunities for people to learn higher level material.

I don’t understand how changing the scoring in a way that makes passage rates much higher is different from making the test easier.

My district moved all of our middle schools onto high school campuses (which is a whole thing😬) and as a middle school teacher, the stress caused by AP for high school kids seems insane. Plus it creates a weird division among staff over those who teach AP vs other academic classes. I took a couple APs in the 1990s (shoutout to AP stats!) and I don’t remember it being so stressful. My site also offers dual enrollment with the local CSU (California) and frankly, I would personally encourage kids to go that route over AP. But that’s just my take 🤷♀️

Preparing to pass the AP exam, is still more work and retention.. than passing the DE class equivalent.

As the sole AP teacher in an IB high school that also teaches the AP course as dual credit (meaning my students don’t necessarily need to take the exam), I find that: (1) Students have wayyyy more options for earning college credit now through early college + dual credit programs (in addition to career/technical programs); (2) It’s hard to convince many students (particularly those who aren’t sure of how they’ll score on the tests) to actually take the test, thus making an AP course or test less desirable; and (3) Schools in general seem to be increasingly offering students opportunities to “leave” high school early through early college/dual enrollment/career ed, which poses developmental concerns for me when I think about the early exodus of so many students who both need the structure/environment provided in high school but also need equitable access to higher ed.

I was thinking back to the AP tests I took, and while I do feel like some of the questions were unreasonably difficult…but I still passed all of them. My lowest score was a 3 (music theory, didn’t take the class, got a 2 on aural skills and a 4 on the written, lowkey shook I passed. I have 2 music degrees now lol), I got a couple 4s and I think 4 5’s? And literally every test I went into it worried I wouldn’t pass. I think it’s OK for them to be adjusted some, but I’m wondering if this might be in response to some colleges only accepting 4s and 5s for credit? Particularly if it’s not in your major, a 3 def should count.

Shout out to Annie Abrams book, Shortchanged, about how the AP has both gotten easier and doesn’t help kids learn deeply about the subject.

I scored for the AP exam and answers I personally would not have taken for an FRQ because I could barely understand them were accepted and could get the point.

@gunnermason82: AP lang has gotten easier. MC used to be 55 qs in an hour. Passages were often older, more archaic. Now we have 45 qs in the same amount of time (1 hr). Also went from 5 choices per question to 4. Also changed 3 of the 5 passages from analysis passages to composition/revision questions which are easier pages for most students. Not saying it’s good or bad, but it is easier. I also think synthesis and argument prompts are a bit easier though that’s subjective admittedly.
