That is called price gouging and it is illegal in the state of Florida. Plus, I’m pretty sure that tow companies have laws that they have to abide by. I would definitely check your local local ordinances and report them to the state CFO.

Florida statute 501.160 makes this illegal. pay with a credit card. on the invoice, write "paid under protest" when you sign. gather all the evidence you can (such as their normal rates) Then file a charge back with your credit card, AND report it to Florida's attorney general office. if neither of these work, sue in small claims. the company will have to prove their emergency costs matches the upcharge. it's a pain in the ass but no way in hell would I let some scamming ass tow company keep my $1500. they can only charge extra if they can prove operational costs also spiked that amount. if a state of emergency is declared in the area, consumers get even more rights. this didn't stop all the out of town tree companies coming into nwFL and charging 3x their normal rates after Isaiah though. people don't fight it though, they just let their insurance pay it, then everyone wonders why their insurance rates are so high. well shit like that is why. not to mention the out of staters don't have the proper licensing to operate in Florida.
