@oregonpublicbroadcasting: In an era where streaming services are getting more expensive, with seemingly infinite choices, some people are returning to DVDs and Blu-rays as a way to watch movies. An analog revival might seem like a recent resurgence. But VHS tapes have maintained a cult following for years in the Northwest — especially in Portland. One major pillar of Portland’s VHS community is the Cinemagic Theater, a single-screen independent movie theater. Every first Friday of the month, Cinemagic co-owners Ryan Frakes and Nicholas Kuechler hold “VHS Night” where the auditorium fills with over 100 people, all there to watch a movie that may have otherwise been lost to time and obscurity. These movies are played on a physical VHS tape and projected from a VCR for audiences. If the tape warbles or jumps during a screening, it’s part of the experience for the crowd. OPB’s Donald Orr, Joey Lovato and Saskia Hatvany attended the August screening of “Bad Moon,” a ‘90s werewolf movie that goes off the rails. They also got to peek behind Cinemagic’s gold curtain to see what makes VHS Night special. They captured their tour on a VHS camcorder. For VHS Night on Friday, Nov. 6, legendary B-movie director Philippe Mora returns to Cinemagic for a screening of his cult classic “Howling III: The Marsupials” — a 1987 Australian horror/comedy featuring werewolves from down under. The event kicks off a full weekend celebrating Mora’s greatest hits, including a 4K remaster of “Art Deco Detective” and “Pterodactyl Woman from Beverly Hills.” Story by Donald Orr/OPB & Joey Lovato/OPB VHS-C Footage by Joey Lovato/OPB & Donald Orr/OPB Edited by Joey Lovato/OPB & Collin Bell/OPB Music provided by Audio Network
