Speaking as a screenwriter, I’m gonna back him up big time on this. Screenwriters have to write for economy. “John cries” is shorthand for “John is having a devastating moment, and the actor can do this character interiority work”. A screenplay is a blueprint to get potential collaborators onboard to picture the movie in their mind and gauge whether they want to be a part of it. The actor’s creative choices on how to depict that moment and get into that character are just as important as the writer’s. It’s the director’s job to make sure everything goes together cohesively, so if the writer is wrong or the actor’s interpretation is, the director gets to be the tiebreaker. But he is 100% spot on that a script is not a mandate. It’s a blueprint.

Yessssss! Screenplays are supposed to only be barebones of a scene. Simply the structure. It’s the actors job to give it the meat and potatoes to bring a scene to life outside of the screenplay

Gluteus Maximus the cat :
Seeing someone trying NOT to cry is so much more engaging than seeing someone sobbing. So many people rely on tears. The water isn’t important. The why is important.

A former theater teacher used to ask, “is that what the character would do? Or is it what the scene SAYS he would do? Does that note make sense for the character in THIS moment knowing what you know about the character?

The perfection of this direction/advice is beyond any amount of money. This goes so far past a scene or a role.

Seems like a privilege of someone in Colman’s situation. A new or unknown actor can’t just toss the script out
