Replying to @karee9699 oh hey, survivorship bias 👋 Babies are born with very little vitamin K, which can put them at risk for excessive bleeding because vitamin K is needed to help our blood to clot. A baby who doesn’t have enough Vitamin K can start to bleed suddenly, without warning. It doesn’t happen all the time, it doesn’t even happen most of the time. But it happens frequently enough that decades were spent studying why fatal bleeds were occuring in babies and what could be done to prevent them. After decades of research, in 1961, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended vitamin K shots for babies immediately after birth. This has been the standard of care ever since. For over 60 years. Shots, in particular, are the most efficient and effective way to get adequate vitamin K to newborn babies. That’s why they are used. And this shot has been given all over the world for decades now to millions, if not billions of babies. And side effects in newborn babies are incredibly rare. There have been no severe illness or deaths ever reported. Not a single 1. And only a single case has ever been reported of an allergic reaction. The black box warning is there because this same product is used at a high dose in older patients to stop bleeding. And it was found that people could have severe, life-threatening allergic reactions (it’s called anaphylaxis) if they got a large dose of vitamin K too rapidly. This is not what happens with newborns. The warning, both intravenous and intramuscular, comes from the product being used in high doses with older patients. Not shots in newborn babies. #vitaminkshot #medicalmisinformation
