@mayinmidlife: Chiefs, what are you teaching your junior officers about trusting the Chiefs Mess? We talk a lot about developing junior Sailors. That’s part of the job, and so is developing junior officers. When a new division officer checks in, take the time to walk the spaces with them. Introduce them to their Sailors. Explain why you’re recommending something. And when you disagree, have the conversation early and give them room to make the call. If we leave junior officers to figure things out on their own, or let them get blindsided by a problem we saw coming, they remember that. Some of those officers will go on to become commanding officers. If their early experience taught them they couldn’t count on the Mess, it makes sense that they might hesitate to lean on it when they take command. I spent 24 years in the Navy and retired as a Senior Chief. One thing I’d ask every Chief to consider is this. When your division officer has a problem they’re embarrassed to bring up, have you given them a reason to come to you anyway? Chiefs and officers, what did a good Chief do early in your career that made you trust them? @Dporc1977 #ChiefsMess #NavyLeadership #JuniorOfficers #MilitaryMentorship #anchorsandbarrelspodcast
