There is absolutely no excuse or justification for murdering a child. But I strongly suspect these foster parents asked for help they did not receive. That does not lessen their responsibility. It raises another question: what warnings were there, who knew, and what could have been done to protect this child?
I feel very strongly that government agencies could have prevented this. I would not be surprised if someone had already warned that something terrible could happen and was not heard. Those are questions that deserve to be investigated.
Every time a child dies, people say they would have taken them, helped, or done anything to keep them safe. I believe people mean that. But what are we doing with that willingness before the next child needs us? There are families asking for help right now.
I know because I am one of them. I have been begging for help for our family and my nephew. I have contacted lawyers, doctors, facilities and child services, gathered documents and explained serious safety concerns repeatedly. And I still have not found a single person in government, in any state involved, willing to advocate for our family or this child. It is absolutely devastating to keep explaining why you are afraid and still have no safe solution.
If you are a reporter, have resources, or know someone who can bring attention to this, please help. Ask what happens to families who report danger and are left waiting. Ask who is responsible for making sure those warnings lead to actual help.
We cannot keep waiting until a child dies to take a family’s desperation seriously. Someone needs to listen while there is still time to prevent the tragedy everyone will later say they would have done anything to stop.
