@dr.starkid: Sacrificing current and future generations for oil industry profits is a crime against humanity. Our government knows what’s at stake. Life on Earth is inextricably linked to its atmosphere. Rapid atmospheric changes have helped drive mass extinctions by changing conditions faster than many species could adapt. We have billions of years of history telling us why this matters. #earth #Science #geology #5minuteplus

The good news is that renewables are doing well despite all of the policies set against them, so if we can reverse those policies the renewable revolution will speed up enormously. The bad news is that we're entering the age of overshoot, where we blow past comfortable global temperatures and exist outside of them for at least a few generations.

i was wondering, if we increase the albedo of all human-made materials as much as possible, could that have any appreciable mitigating factor on polar ice loss? or would that not even make a dent because of the scale of the problem 🤔

I commented this elsewhere, but I think a really useful (informative) topic would be the runaway greenhouse effect and how it changed the viability of Venus's atmosphere. Explaining how Venus went from good to pure death in terms of temperature that would help people parallel to earth perhaps?

When they show the list of what is most important to Americans in the election I hardly ever see the environment on the list. It is a travesty.

I’ve heard people use a version of this to say this is why global warming is not a “thing” because the earth naturally goes through these fluctuations. Could you speak on that and how to dispel that notion?

Trees are our best way to remove carbon from the atmosphere. Millions of years ago, the development of trees through evolution are what made our atmosphere more inhabitable for most life. Those trees formed huge fossil fuel deposits, trapping all of that carbon in the earth and and creatures evolved into the environment based on that removal of carbon. Now, burning those fossil fuels is releasing all of that carbon back into the atmosphere and is creating an environment we didn’t evolve to inhabit. We need to stop burning fossil fuels and plant more trees to recreate the balance.

I grew up with two Republican parents in a fairly conservative household, and for most of my life, I honestly didn’t believe in human caused climate change. I assumed Earth’s climate naturally went through cycles, and this was just another one of them. It wasn’t until a year or two ago, when I took it upon myself to actually understand the carbon cycle, that everything clicked. For millions of years, carbon was removed from the atmosphere, and some of it eventually became trapped underground in fossil fuels. Now we’re burning those fuels and releasing that ancient carbon back into the atmosphere at an extraordinary rate. It seems so obvious to me now, but I genuinely didn’t understand it for most of my life. Honestly, I feel dumb for having been so ignorant for nearly 40 years. It’s humbling to realize how confidently you can believe something without actually understanding the science behind it. I’m just grateful I finally took the time to learn, and I wish more people would do the same.
