@pbsnews: California Governor Gavin Newsom has just commuted the sentences of all 548 prisoners on the state’s death row. That’s about a quarter of all death sentences in the country. The sentences will now become life without parole, though many will require additional review. Clemency requests for those with more than one felony conviction must be approved by the California Supreme Court . In an open letter to all Californians, Newsom called the move one of the most difficult decisions of his career but said, “we cannot execute people in our imperfect legal system and remain true to our core values, first among them justice and human decency.” Newsom has two months left in office and the move comes as he considers a potential presidential run. Determining who deserves the death sentence has been inconsistent, and the fact that innocent people have been executed makes this a net positive. The presidential run however... I'm not so sure.

Some people do things that are so awful. There’s no other way about it. Execution is the more ethical thing to do. I’m not sure why they believe keeping them locked up in a cage for life is more progressive.

Trump has military power, influence over the Supreme Court, and the power of executive orders. He will be president until 2029, holds veto power, and can choose his successor. As for the midterms—the president’s party almost always loses, just as happened to Obama in 2010.
