That’s more than 1,000 times its own weight… I’ve been looking into gallium. I’d never heard of gallium, but it turns out it’s the metal that allows us to transform high frequency waves. It’s used for Wi-Fi, GPS, 4G & 5G. Which means it’s not only used for our phones but EVs, radar systems and AI data centres. Gallium is mined in countries like Guinea, leading to massive deforestation, loss of biodiversity and carbon emissions from processing bauxite. The extraction generates a ‘red mud’ waste which leaks into groundwater and rivers and degrades farmers soil, reduces access to clean drinking water and kills fish in the river system. Almost all (99%) of gallium is refined in China, which means they can (and have) used export bans as political leverage. The issue with gallium is that so little of it is used in each phone, it makes it economically unviable to be recycled from e-waste. This is just one story, of one of the metals found in our phones.
