@contentwatchhq: Four Hospitalized After Overnight Heights Townhouse Fire Forces Dramatic Third-Story Escapes HOUSTON — A family of four was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital overnight after a fast-moving fire engulfed a Heights townhouse, forcing a mother and two young children to leap from a third-story window into the arms of bystanders. The father remains in critical condition after suffering severe burns while trying to help his family escape the flames. The mother sustained back injuries during the leap from the third floor, according to District Chief Terry Amaro of District 31 Bravo. Both children were also transported for medical evaluation. According to Amaro, neighbors played a heroic role prior to first responders arriving on scene, positioning themselves below the three-story structure to catch the children and assist the mother as they jumped to escape the smoke and heat. Preliminary findings indicate the fire originated accidentally in the garage. Surveillance footage from neighboring Ring doorbells showed a vehicle catching fire inside the garage; the father attempted to pull the burning car out, but the blaze quickly consumed the multi-story structure. Arson investigators have reviewed the footage and are leading the ongoing investigation. Firefighters faced significant structural hazards inside the primary burn unit. Due to truss construction with metal gusset plates, the interior stairwells and sections of subflooring collapsed, making interior attack conditions untenable. Crews utilized the adjacent townhome—designated as the "Bravo" exposure—to battle the blaze from an alternative vantage point. While the shared wall and sheetrock firewall held, preventing the flames from spreading into the adjacent living quarters, firefighters did cause minor operational damage to the neighboring unit while extinguishing the main fire. The blaze was fully contained to the original unit, and no other injuries were reported.
