I like Van Hollen, he surprised me. I appreciate the evolution of his record and most recently his transparency over his decisions on Palestine. We're mostly strict about our politicians in Maryland. He also interviews pretty well.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen would make an excellent majority leader. He runs an air tight DC office and amazing district offices throughout Maryland. He is very thoughtful, realistic, and yet understands when it’s time to be bold and take a stand.

Speaker also sets the agenda. AIPAC employees are not going to set an agenda that ends Israeli funding, the Iran war, investigates the Epstein files, or prosecutes the criminals in the executive branch (from the President to ICE agents). So, Hakeem Jeffries is unqualified.

And the speaker cannot sit in any committees - so whomever “takes over” the role loses their senior committee position.

We need the nerdiest, organized, quiet but powerful rule following paperpusher we have. Thats NOT going to be our "stars" its going to be a quiet, behind the scenes beast!

I think both a realistic and positive pitche for leadership is Van Hollen/Khana for majority leader/speaker

But we also need people who will do something and not bend to AIPAC. so not Jeffries.

no one wants to hear this. they don’t want to hear that if you want good bills on the floor, the aim is to push the speaker to devolve power to committees, which is much more viable than trying to dethrone jeffries

But that’s the issue, isn’t it? We KNOW Hakeem Jeffries won’t prioritize Medicare for All. He’s said so himself. He’s also openly stated that he doesn’t want to pursue retribution or accountability, choosing instead to focus on affordability. That’s INSANE. Affordability matters, but so does accountability. Democracies collapse when the rule of law is no longer enforced and there are no consequences to deter others from committing even worse offenses. And beyond his policy priorities, Jeffries has demonstrated serious failures in leadership. Just this past month, he couldn’t even whip his own caucus for a basic roll call vote. Even Nancy Pelosi made remarks about how embarrassing that was. Given all of this, I think it’s entirely fair for people to have great disdain for the prospect of him becoming Speaker, and I don’t think that criticism comes from a naive understanding of the Speaker’s role. If other members of Congress aren’t willing to challenge his leadership, that already signals a failure of the next Congress before it even begins. They know Jeffries is deeply unpopular, yet they’re choosing to ignore their constituents anyway. That’s undemocratic, and it’s wrong.

I don’t entirely disagree. I’m willing, if not thrilled, to give Jeffries a shot. But Schumer? He is also incompetent at the skills you listed, not just at public communications. He can’t lead anyone with conviction. He folds at the idea of any slight conflict. He’s a fossil from another time. And he’s deeply and widely disliked. Not equipped.
