@shrink.think: Does BPD really get better on its own? A commenter tried to use the landmark McLean Hospital study to prove me wrong... but they accidentally handed me the exact receipts that prove my point. 🧾 There is a HUGE difference between symptomatic remission and full functional recovery: 🔹 Symptomatic Remission (86%–93%): The acute storm subsides. Impulsivity, severe crises, and explosive reactions fade over time as the brain matures and baseline reactivity settles. 🔹 Full Functional Recovery (~50%): Building a stable 40-hour workweek, healthy long-term relationships, and daily life structures after years of trauma. Symptom relief and life-building are two totally different skill sets. Brain maturation and time help quiet the storm—remission is the foundation. But therapy is what bridges the gap so you can build a life worth living instead of just waiting around for years to pass. I started The Mind I Became by Cal Hollins out of curiosity and ended up reading way more in one sitting than I planned.

Hey, is it possible to notice BPD young? Ik a lot of people say no because it’s similar to “hormones” but watching the video explains bpd and how their brain works is like finally being able to put everything in my brain into words. I don’t want to “self diagnose” but I do want to know what’s going on with me.

Mine has wildly improved since I turned about 25. Symptoms still rear their ugly head sometimes but it’s much less impactful than it used to be

I think I’m in symptomatic remission off and on the last couple of years. DBT therapy was a great experience for me and is probably the main reason I am able to go without any of my symptoms for extended periods. One day I’ll be in full recovery.

What if it is the other way around? I have a (nearly) full time job as an ophthalmic surgeon, an intact family (2 kids), intact social life and am still experiencing severe symptoms that need hospitalisation at times. I‘ve been practising DBT/skills for over 1 year now. Got diagnosed at the age of 43 1.5 years ago after 20 years of a nearly symptom free period

Side note: the irony of the study coming from the McLean hospital where the plot of "Girl, Interrupted" (the book) takes place and where also Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton (among others) have been treated. Idk if the life still imitates art ;)

Thank you for educating us on how to read scientific studies as they often are being misrepresented with people claiming "authority bias" 💖 And, in my case, my treatment goal isn't for my symptoms to go away completely because I know it's not realistic. My goal is to build enough self-esteem and have enough insight and healthy coping skills so the symptoms won't make me hate myself and interfere with daily as much as they used to. I also have OCD and in that case, trying to "fight" the illness is like putting out fire with gasoline since the treatment is simply accepting the intrusive thoughts as a symptom like a symptom of any other illness (cough from having a flu) and living your life regardless. And the more you engage in life, overtime you become more 'grounded' in reality but it has to happen "organically" and can't be rushed

I want to find a video about a Borderline personality married to a schizoid personality for 21 years. It’s been a ride! Is there any current (only found on older) studies on this relationship dynamic.
