@primetimenewsusa: Days after a 12-year-old boy was s*xually assaulted in Turin in September, Justice Undersecretary Andrea Ostellari of the League announced a working group of several ministries on medical and drug treatments for s*x offenders. That includes androgen blockade, the hormone suppression known as chemical castration. It was time, he said, to "move from commitments to action." That working group was first promised two years earlier. In September 2024, during the Chamber of Deputies' debate on a security bill, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government accepted a non-binding motion from League lawmaker Igor Iezzi. It called for a panel to study psychiatric and drug treatment for people convicted of s*xual violence, given only with their consent and with temporary, reversible effects. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, the League's leader, celebrated it as "zero tolerance for r*pists and p*dophiles." A separate League bill, which would let judges order hormone-blocking drugs of the kind used against prostate cancer for offenders a court considers dangerous, has been stalled in the Senate since 2023. No Italian law currently provides for chemical castration. Democratic Party lawmaker Simona Bonafè called the motion "an unconstitutional proposal." Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani, whose Forza Italia party is part of Meloni's coalition, has opposed the idea since 2023, saying chemical castration is not the solution.
