@tracy_tysonmd: It’s only early November, and the CDC has already reported a pediatric influenza death this season. 💔 Influenza is NOT just a cold. It can cause serious lung infections, complications, and even death in previously healthy children. As pediatricians, our goal is to prevent those complications, and we have tools to do that! 💉 1. PREVENT IT. Annual influenza vaccination reduces the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death. And when we vaccinate children, we’re also helping protect vulnerable people in our communities. 🧼 2. STOP THE SPREAD. Stay home when sick, wash hands, cover coughs, and avoid unnecessary exposure to others. Not every child needs an office visit or flu test. Call us first! 💊 3. TREAT IT EARLY. Antivirals like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) can reduce complications, especially in children at higher risk or with severe illness. They’re most effective when started within 48 hours, but can still help some children after that window. Call your pediatrician early to discuss whether treatment is appropriate. And remember, difficulty breathing, dehydration, or a child who is getting significantly worse needs prompt medical evaluation.
