@dr.zac.spiritos: Are steroids good for everybody? Absolutely not. But for the right person, at the right time, they can make a meaningful difference. I’m seeing so many people with MCAS struggling with the “October slide” right now. And for some, these flares are devastating. The combination of profound fatigue, brain fog, and joint pain can make it nearly impossible to work, function, or even get through the day. And when these flares last weeks or even months, we need tools to help people get through them. Sometimes, a good old-fashioned corticosteroid can be one of those tools. Of course, steroids come with risks. Some people actually feel worse on them, and they’re certainly not something we want to rely on long term. When we use them, we aim for the lowest effective dose, the shortest reasonable duration, and monitor people carefully. Others respond better to antihistamines, occasionally benzodiazepines for specific symptoms, or anti-inflammatory medications like Celebrex. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. But for someone dealing with debilitating fatigue, brain fog, and joint pain during a prolonged flare, a carefully selected short course of steroids can sometimes provide meaningful relief. The goal isn’t to put everyone on steroids. It’s to recognize that when someone is barely functioning, we have options worth considering. Sometimes we need to help people get through a really difficult stretch while we work toward longer-term stability. #mcas #pots #heds #dysautonomia #mastcellactivationsyndrome

I appreciate your honesty that steroids won’t work for everyone. I have congenital pan hypopituitarism when I was 18 my endocrinologist without explaining switched me from my Cortisol tablets to prednisone that was the worst year medically of my life, I had severe depression. I gained an enormous amount of weight in less than two months I went from a size 13 US to a size 24. I have been on steroids since I was 11 years old, but personally for me prednisone was the worst thing ever. That was also my graduation year my self-esteem and self worth or had no time low. I didn’t even have any of my graduation pictures developed.

I am on diclofenac and antihistamines. Steroids made me feel great but boy do you crave salt (even more so than my pots) and gain weight like nuts, but I was on them for months. I had a decade long flare of MCAS, RA, incredibly high inflammatory levels and my heart was losing its mind on the daily.

And then I have a severe reaction to the steriod that was supposed to stop the reactions...yep, that's me allergic to prednisone & benadryl. So fun!

Don’t most people with MCAS have a connective tissue disorder like HEDS? Don’t steroids destroy connective tissue?

I wish more doctors believed and trusted us to tell them what works for us.
I overall do not like steroids and don't want to take them. I've learned to be so careful with every little thing I put in my body, but when I feel like I'm 102 and can't function, it's necessary and helps so very much.

It’s all amazing until steroid induced adrenal insufficiency takes over… sure do miss my prednisone but I’d rather not have another crisis from it🤪

Wonderful except that first 24-26 hrs I’m over 450 and there’s not enough insulin in the world to bring me back in check. I went through enough Fiasp to ☠️5 people and my body just laughed.

I remember getting them for what they kept thinking was some kind of flu and finally were like fine. We’ll just try you on a course of steroids. That was the best time of my life. I did chores when I felt sick, but I didn’t feel bad.
