The world’s last known surviving white giraffe is an unnamed male living in the Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy in Garissa County, northeastern Kenya. His remarkable white appearance is caused by leucism, a rare genetic condition that results in reduced pigmentation. Unlike albinism, leucism does not affect eye color, which is why his eyes remain dark. He is the sole survivor of a family of three white giraffes first spotted in the area in 2017. Tragically, in March 2020, armed poachers killed his mother and his seven month old calf. To help protect him, conservationists from the Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy, the Kenya Wildlife Service, and partner organizations fitted a solar powered GPS tracking device to one of his horns, known as an ossicone, in November 2020. The tracker sends location signals every hour, allowing wildlife rangers to monitor his movements and respond if he may be at risk from poachers. This extraordinary giraffe remains an important symbol of wildlife conservation and the efforts to protect rare animals from poaching.
