Could your ankle mobility be part of the drama? IDK, but here’s a quick way to check what your ankle is doing 👇 When I assess an ankle, I’m not only asking what hurts and what you can’t do. I’m also looking at range of motion, strength, and how the ankle moves during the things giving you trouble, like squats or running. If you’ve rolled your ankle and your squat still feels off months later, one thing I check is ankle dorsiflexion range of motion, specifically closed chain (foot staying on the floor). Meet the knee-to-wall test. You can do it standing like I’m showing, in half kneel, or with your foot up on a bench. 1. Go barefoot and line your toes up with the wall 2. Drive your knee toward the wall over your second toe, heel stays down 3 Slide your foot back an inch at a time and repeat. Mark & measure the farthest distance where your knee still touches the wall without your heel lifting Healthy adults tend to average around 4 to 5 inches, but that’s an average, not a target. Plenty of people sit above or below it and move great. What’s more useful is comparing side to side. Your other ankle is your reference point. This isn’t pass/fail, and it can’t tell you why something hurts. It’s just a snapshot of how your ankle moves right now. A stiffer ankle isn’t automatically a problem, and lots of people with totally fine ankles have a squat that feels off for other reasons (technique, strength, training load, even body proportions). Where it gets useful is when one side is noticeably different after an injury, or when you’re missing range you actually need for what you want to do. Getting that back is one of the first things I like to work on after a sprain, as early as day 1! Want a part 2 with exercises to build that range? Let me know in the comments! 💌Save this to test yourself next time your ankle feels “off,” and send it to a friend with an old ankle injury. - #anklemobility #anklestiffness #stiffankle #anklesprain
