How could an album sitting at #2 on the 500 greatest albums of all time been a disappointment and underperform when released? See story below about The Beach Boys “Pet Sounds”#60smusic #beachboys It wasn’t that people did not like The Beach Boys music-in fact, the public was obsessed with them. However, America loved them for their fun in the sun “surf Rock” Image. When Brian Wilson presented a deeply melancholy, symphonic art – pop album about emotional vulnerability, Capitol records panicked. They believed it was too weird and commercially risky, which led to a series of marketing failures that crippled the albums initial US run. Just two months after pet sounds was released in May 1966, Capitol records did something practically unheard of for a major contemporary band: they rush, released a greatest hits compilation. Titled best of The Beach Boys, it featured they’re older, sunny hits from 1963 in 1964. This completely cannibalized Pet Sounds sales. Record stores actively chose to order the safe, guaranteed to sell best of album rather than restocking the experimental Pet Sounds. Ultimately Capitol had no idea how to market avant-garde pop to teenagers. Instead of playing snippets of the Revolutionary music to build hype, produced bizarre radio spots featuring comedy skits by the band. Listeners had no idea what the album actually sounded like. For the cover art while Brian Wilson was creating high art in the studio, sent the band to the San Diego zoo to feed goats for the cover. The visuals screamed “juvenile novelty act“, completely mismatching, the mature, heartbreaking music inside. Capitol executives thought the record was a “dead letter“ from the moment they heard it. Because they didn’t value it’s artistic merit, they rushed the vinyl production. The original US pressings suffered from low quality vinyl and bloated, muddy, duo phonic stereo mixes, which degraded the listening experience for audio files and critics who might have otherwise champion it the right way. Finally by 1966 the American rock scene was shifting toward the gritty counterculture style of the British invasion in the emerging hippies. Because of their clean, cut striped shirt past American critics and cooler music crowds initially dismissed The Beach Boys as “squares“ without giving the record a fair chance. In the end, Brian Wilson’s pioneering use of multi track, layering, orchestral arrangements, and unconventional instruments that was not (theremins, harpsichords, dog whistles) fundamentally changed how music was produced.
