@laterellroach: *TRUE — with one important caveat.* Gavin Newsom did announce this today, Thursday Nov. 5: > *California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday he is commuting every death sentence in his state to a sentence of life in prison without parole – nearly eight years after declaring a moratorium on executions.* > *California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Nov. 5 that he is commuting all of California’s death sentences to life in prison without the possibility of parole, an extraordinary use of his clemency authority that affects 548 people currently sentenced to death in the state.* > *California Governor Gavin Newsom announced today, November 5, 2026, that he is commuting the death sentences of all 548 people on the state’s death row, granting the largest mass clemency in American history.* So the image gets the number and the outcome right: *548 → life in prison without parole.* ### The caveat: Not all 548 are final _yet_ > *Taking hundreds of people off death row won’t be automatic. There are 382 cases the California Supreme Court will need to review and approve the commutation, according to the governor’s office. Those cases involve prisoners with more than one felony conviction.* > *The state constitution requires the California Supreme Court to approve clemency for anyone convicted of more than one felony, and CalMatters reported that four of the court's seven justices must sign off in those cases.* In other words: - *166 cases:* Newsom can do on his own, effective immediately - *382 cases:* Need California Supreme Court approval first And it does *NOT* abolish the death penalty in California: > *Newsom, who imposed a moratorium on executions shortly after taking office in 2019, said the action does not repeal California’s death penalty and applies only to current death sentences.* Prosecutors can still seek death in _future_ cases. *Bottom line: TRUE that Newsom announced commutation for all 548 to life without parole — but FALSE if you read the image as “all 548 are already done.” About 70% still need court sign-off.*
