Nighthawks are found all over the United States, but there’s a good chance you’ve never seen one. “It’s really rare to actually see them in the wild, except for when they’re migrating,” said Sheida Soleimani, founder of Congress of the Birds (@Congress of the Birds), where two juvenile common nighthawks were recently rehabilitated and released. The little birds are crepuscular aerial insectivores, meaning they’re mostly active at dawn and dusk and they eat insects while they’re in flight. They also have one of the longest migrations of any North American bird when they head back to South America in the late summer and early fall. But these birds are struggling. According to the North American Breeding Bird Survey, “In the U.S., Common Nighthawk populations declined by over 1% per year between 1966 and 2019, for a cumulative decline of about 48%.” “We suspect that there are multiple factors that are playing into common nighthawk decline, both within New England specifically and across their range in general,” said Linsay Herlily, New Hampshire Audubon biologist and Coordinator of Project Nighthawk. “One thing that we are particularly concerned with is an overall decline in insect populations, and that’s affecting all species of aerial insectivores, not just common nighthawks. Another factor would be habitat loss.” Both Soleimani and Herlily say that a good way to help these birds, as well as other aerial insectivores, is to be mindful of the kinds of pesticides you use at home, which may affect the insects common nighthawks eat. 🎤 Hosted, produced & edited by Raquel C.
