@therapistmomunfiltered: 🚨 Parents, are you worried your teenager is making dangerous choices, hanging around the wrong friends, experimenting with substances, or pulling away from you? Here's something I want you to understand as a licensed family therapist who works with teens: **Your teen's behavior is information.** Behind concerning behaviors, there may be an unmet need, an emotion they don't know how to manage, or an attempt to find belonging, validation, control, or relief. When we focus ONLY on stopping the behavior through punishment, control, or consequences, we risk missing what's driving it. This doesn't mean ignoring dangerous choices or removing accountability. It means getting CURIOUS before jumping straight to correction. Instead of only asking, "How do I stop this behavior?" start asking, "What is this behavior doing for my teen? What are they trying to communicate or cope with?" Because understanding the WHY helps us respond more effectively to the WHAT. 💚 Follow for Part 2, where we'll explore how your teen's thoughts can influence their emotions, choices, and behaviors. #ParentingTeens #TeenBehavior #TeenMentalHealth #ParentingTeenagers #AuthoritativeParenting

What if you’re doing all the guiding and coaching and authoritative parenting and it falls on deaf ears? What if you have a 17 year-old junior in high school who isn’t interested in anything. I don’t believe in punishment, but how do you motivate an unmotivated teenager?
