HOW REJECTION OF ONE LEGAL ADVICE 60 YEARS AGO PUT NIGERIA INSIDE TROUBLE TODAY The foundation for today's trouble in Nigeria was laid 60 years ago. The seed was sown, the tree has grown big, and we are now harvesting the bitter fruits. Massive youth unemployment, cheap graduate labour forced at gunpoint by NYSC, militarism, banditry, poverty amidst plenty, corrupt politicians, costly education, fake drugs, civil war, tribal wars, and general hatred. These are but a few fruits of the legal counsel that Nigerians rejected 60 years ago. What happened then? Nigeria was about to become an independent country, 60 years after Britain had begun ruling Nigeria as Protectorates. So it was being debated what type of Constitution Nigeria should adopt. A federal constitution was settled upon. However, among the three founding fathers, only Awolowo was a trained lawyer. He qualified as a barrister and worked as a lawyer. He was an asset in the negotiation with the British government. Therefore, Barrister Awolowo offered a legal counsel on behalf of all Nigerians and future generations: That a "Secession Clause" should be inserted into the Constitution, which can be invoked in case the Nigerian union proves unworkable. It was a safety valve. An emergency exit. A caution. But there was a man - an orator, good at speaking big grammar, with a string of degrees from American universities, but a novice in legal training. He used his big grammar to argue against Awolowo's legal counsel. And the British, whose interest was best served by a forced unity, supported Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. Thus, the legal counsel was thrown into destruction. Fourteen years later, Igbos were being massacred in Northern Nigeria and were in abject desperation to exit Nigeria in a hurry. They were desperate for that same "Secession Clause" - but they had thrown away the key and were locked inside Nigeria. No escape route! We are in this together! Azikiwe rejected the counsel that could have saved us, yet today we are all complaining about the unity of Nigeria. We must share the story. Correct the wrong information. Put the blame where it belongs. Follow my page for more history that heals. #SecessionClause #AwolowoTheLawyer #Azikiwe #1953Mistake #NigerianConstitution
