In 2023, Reuters investigated the family histories of America’s political leaders, tracing their ancestors through historical records. Among the five living presidents at the time, researchers found documented slaveholding ancestry for four. Jimmy Carter. George W. Bush. Bill Clinton. And Barack Obama. Joe Biden was also linked to slaveholding ancestors. That made five presidents with documented ancestral connections to slavery. But Trump’s family history was different. His paternal grandfather immigrated from Germany in 1885. His mother immigrated from Scotland in 1930. Both family lines arrived in the United States after slavery had been abolished. Reuters found no evidence that Trump descended from American slaveholders. But the story gets more complicated. Barack Obama, America’s first Black president, had documented slaveholding ancestors through his white mother’s family. And Bill Clinton’s ancestry also connected him to slaveholding families. George W. Bush’s family history included ancestors associated with slavery. These findings reveal how deeply slavery was woven into the family histories of American political leaders. But they don’t establish what any modern president believes. An ancestor’s actions are not the moral responsibility of a descendant. And the absence of documented slaveholding ancestry doesn’t establish that someone’s ancestors were free from every form of historical injustice. The research tells us something about America’s past. Not whether a president today is a good or bad person. Slavery ended more than 160 years ago.
