Imagine washing windows more than 1,300 feet above the streets of New York City! When the original World Trade Center opened in 1973, its iconic Twin Towers stood 110 stories tall and were the tallest buildings in the world. Together, they featured an astonishing 43,600 windows, covering more than 600,000 square feet of glass. Keeping these windows clean required an innovative system of automated window-washing machines that traveled along stainless steel tracks built into the buildings’ exteriors. These specially designed machines used rotating brushes and squeegees to clean the glass as they descended the towers. However, certain areas, including the enormous windows near the observation deck and the famous Windows on the World restaurant, still required workers to clean them manually at extraordinary heights. Among the most famous window washers was Roko Camaj, a Montenegrin immigrant who began working at the World Trade Center in 1973. For nearly three decades, Camaj helped maintain the towers’ windows, frequently working hundreds of feet above Manhattan with breathtaking views of the city. Tragically, Camaj was among the nearly 3,000 people killed during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Today, the history of the World Trade Center’s window washers offers a fascinating glimpse into the engineering, maintenance, and everyday lives of the people who helped keep one of America’s most recognizable architectural landmarks operating for nearly three decades.
