Diwali is a national celebration of Trinidad and Tobago. The day is preceded by almost 1 month of preparation, festivals and celebrations. Most businesses, banks, workplaces, offices, schools and Hindu temples arrange celebrations involving initial prayers, ceremonial lighting of deyas and lovely food. A Diwali Nagar offering all aspects of the culture and the festival of Diwali is opened to the public. In the week leading up to Diwali, public office workers wear sarees, shalwar kameez and kurta suits complete with costume jewellery to work. This is all absolutely not confined to one ethnic or racial group, with all ethnicities and races wearing celebratory outfits, attending events and partaking of all on offer. I'm a West Indian mother and grandmother and whilst living in New York , I knew some of my East Indian neighbours who gambled on Diwali night . My family are strict vegetarians from July when we start cleansing our body to celebrate Krishna Janam Ashtmi, then Ganesha's Utsav, Nau ratri , Diwali , and we go on until Kartic Nahan .
