🚨 Speeding is one of the main causes of serious and fatal road traffic collisions in the UK – it takes a split second when you’re behind the wheel to make a decision that could change your life, and the lives of others, forever. We often get a negative response when we publicise traffic operations relating to speeding. Common comments reference it being a ‘money grabbing operation’ and that it’s not worth us doing…. But did you know that between January and August this year, we’ve had 21 fatal collisions on Hertfordshire’s roads – which resulted in 25 tragic deaths. There were also 213 serious injury collisions, causing 321 casualties. Sadly, the majority of these could have been avoided. A large part of these operations is about awareness and education, like in this case where officers carried speed checks in an area of Herts where there had been a fatal collision earlier this year. 🚗 The ‘Fatal Five’ driving behaviours – careless driving, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone or other hand-held devices and speeding – are the leading causes of collisions across the UK. As a driver, it is your responsibility to be safe. Not only do you put yourself in danger if you take the risk of committing any of these offences, but you are also endangering all other road users too – other motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. We don’t want to have to knock on your family’s door to tell them you have been involved in a serious collision. ❗️We are currently running a road safety campaign, ‘A Split Second’, which focuses on how the split second decisions motorists make can change their lives and the lives of others forever.
