Two rabbits arrive at my clinic. Neither has been eating. I might syringe-feed one of them. For the other, that same decision could make their condition significantly worse. Here's what's going through my head as their veterinarian. First, I want to know HOW they stopped eating. Has their appetite gradually decreased over a few days, with smaller droppings? Or were they perfectly fine a few hours ago, then suddenly stopped eating and became visibly painful? That difference immediately changes my level of concern. Next, I examine the rabbit in front of me. Their body temperature, hydration, level of pain and, particularly, what I feel when palpating their abdomen. Is their stomach relatively soft and non-distended? Or is it enlarged, tense and painful? If I'm concerned about an obstruction or significant gastric distension, I'm investigating further, often with radiographs and sometimes additional imaging or blood tests. Because here's the risk I'm weighing: Rabbits cannot vomit. If food cannot move out of the stomach because of an obstruction, syringe feeding can worsen an already dangerous situation. On the other hand, when I've assessed that assisted feeding is safe, nutritional support can be an essential part of recovery. Sometimes my first priority is stabilisation, correcting dehydration and controlling pain. Some rabbits will even start eating voluntarily once those issues are addressed. I also need to understand WHY they stopped eating in the first place. Dental pain? Another painful condition? An actual gastrointestinal obstruction? And before assisted feeding, I need to know they can safely tolerate and swallow it. So when I decide whether to syringe-feed a rabbit, I'm trying to establish what is happening inside their body, whether feeding is safe, and what needs to happen first. ⚠️ A rabbit who stops eating needs urgent veterinary assessment. Please don't attempt syringe feeding without veterinary guidance.
