Unfortunately South Asian culture, traditions and rules are bended and sometimes not applicable to western standards that what is deemed the norm in their home country seems bizarre in another. What westerners don’t get is a lot of these people do these things due to survival. So it looks like a “lie”. And sadly this kind of conflation for people like him becomes problematic. Like only South Asians get the “cousin brother” thing because that’s how the lineage is taught to us. Eastern thinking cannot be applied to west standards. All of this pulls away from the real case tho.

I am not defending him but usually in Southeast Asia even if u are born in India u can identify as Nepali if u have parents or roots from Nepal. Also at the same time if u are an immigrant in USA or any other country u have to tell them that u were born in India at least for this case
