It was a dog eat dog world and everyone was at it. Obviously it was evil, but humans were the first commodity ever traded, long before “Britain” was a thing.

This James Connolly quote is for the monarchy specifically but can be applied more generally. “We will not blame him for the crimes of his ancestors if he relinquishes the royal rights of his ancestors; but as long as he claims their rights, by virtue of descent, then, by virtue of descent, he must shoulder the responsibility for their crimes.”

i mean...it shouldn't. it's like asking the US south to pay war reparations to the north. we banned slavery before everyone else, we forced countries to ban it also

JCowley :
For thousands of years, human beings were traded as slaves across civilisations and were the first things we traded as a species. Britain was not the origin of slavery, but it became a leading force in its abolition, at enormous financial and human cost. The Arab slave trade was extensive and persisted for centuries. We should acknowledge the full history of slavery, not selectively assign inherited guilt or demand perpetual reparations from generations who neither committed nor experienced those injustices.
