Sabbath Nugget #16: Isaiah 58: 13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: 14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. We must not forget that the Sabbath was given in Eden before sin ever entered the world. And work was given to Adam that was not wearisome labor. Labor is not part of the curse, but weariness from labor is. It was not until after the fall that it was said to Adam: …Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. Gen 3:17-19 All this was because he sinned. If he had remained loyal to God, the earth would have continued to yield bountifully only good things and labor would have been a pleasure. Yet the sabbath would still have been kept, not as a rest for the body, because there was no weariness, but as a season of delightful communion with God. We may refrain from labour scrupulously on the Sabbath just as the Pharisees did, but if we don’t know and delight in Jesus on that day, we are not keeping the Sabbath of the Lord. True Sabbath rest can only be found in Christ. It is impossible for the government to require all men to keep the sabbath, even if the government legislates a day of rest in order to be able to begin the next week’s pursuits with more strength because the rest of the Sabbath is a spiritual rest. Only the spirit of God can give spiritual rest, and the Spirit of God is not subject to acts of parliament or decrees of courts. Even if the government made the seventh-day (Saturday) the legislated Sabbath the result would be the same. God does not use compulsion, and He has not authorized any man or body of men to use compulsion. The Sabbath is FOR man - it is the greatest blessing that God has for man. It shows us the power by which we may be saved. But to force people to keep the Sabbath would be the same as to force them to be saved. Christ says He will DRAW all men to Himself (John 12:32). He does not DRIVE them. He goes BEFORE the sheep as the Good Shepherd (John 10:14), and leads them with His voice.
