@lostchefinsweden: I’m from California, where saying hello to someone you pass on the street is almost second nature. But after moving to Sweden, I’ve discovered that social interactions can work a little differently! Today I was walking with a coworker when we passed someone coming the other direction. We made eye contact, so naturally I said hello. My coworker immediately wondered why I’d done that! It’s funny how something that feels completely normal in one culture can feel a little awkward in another. I’m still learning the unwritten social rules here, and I’m curious: Do you greet strangers when you pass them in Sweden, or is it better to just keep walking? #swedishculture #lifeinsweden #culturaldifferences #swedishsocialrules #lostchefinsweden
give a very soft of a smile (not with both corners of your mouth) and nod respectfully. one of the Sweden "passing" rules that's acceptable

As an social introvert, undiagnosed autism, this happens to me all the time. Never learn the code, and it differs from the countryside to the city, so there's no use learning the difference. I usually call my self "international" when I cross swedish greeting boundaries and shrug it off. 🤷♀️🤭🤣

I look back and do the slightest possible nod to confirm the eyes lock. No more is needed.

I always try to say hello if I meet someone but most of the time the people you meet just look the other way [Glädjetårar][Glädjetårar][Glädjetårar]

My experience of Skåne is that it is much more common that you say a "Hej hej"

Saying “Hej hej” can be a good option. It’s a bit like saying hello and good bye in the same sentence and dosen’t require the person you meet to interact. Whether you greet someone you meet varies widely depending on if you’re in a larger town or smaller community.

A good and subtle nod always do the trick. You acknowledge each other and move on. On the countryside however, you say hello to everyone.

I usually say hej, smile and nod. Not in any way suggesting there should be further interaction. And I don’t get annoyed if there’s nothing in return..

it's more that in some places it is accepted and not expected and in some places neither. It's more that in more intimate places it's more common and in big public places it's uncommon. On you're block many doit but on a street in Stockholm not so much.

I would say it depends on the size of the place. in the small village grew up in you would always say hello. where i live now you don't, unless you live on the same street

😁 It varies. A lot of people do NOT lock eyes but the opposite, do their best to look ANY other direction than at you. :)

The production team for "Allt för Sverige" hasn't reached out to you yet, I take it? I really think you could contribute quite a bit—sharing insights on Swedish culture and other topics—even though you’re American. Personally, I’d love to see you take part in the show in some capacity.

I think it's a generation thing...I was born -77 and my parents taught me to always say hello to people but when you do it to most of the younger generations they look at you as if you are a weirdo😆
