We ALL have moments when we’re overwhelmed, stressed, or frustrated, and we react in ways we’re not proud of. The difference between BEING emotionally immature and ACTING often shows up AFTER the moment passes. Can we look back and say, “Wow, I didn’t handle that well.” Can we self-reflect, recognize how our behavior affected someone else, take accountability, apologize when needed, and try to do better next time? For someone who consistently struggles with emotional maturity, those steps can be INCREDIBLY difficult. They may struggle to recognize their own behavior, acknowledge when they’ve hurt someone, or offer a GENUINE apology. In today’s video, I’m trying to help us imagine what it might feel like to experience the world through the eyes of someone who struggles with emotional maturity. Think about this mom sitting in a restaurant, feeling so deeply wounded simply because her son had breakfast with his wife’s mom first. Imagine how painful life could be if something like that could hurt you so deeply. If everyday situations could leave you feeling rejected, overlooked, or unimportant. That would be MISERABLE. I have compassion for that, and I don’t condone her behavior. I would absolutely have boundaries around it. But this is why I believe understanding WHY people do what they do is a SUPERPOWER. The more I understand someone’s behavior, the less likely I am to personalize it. I don’t have to carry their reactions around as though they’re a reflection of my worth. Understanding gives me perspective, compassion allows me to see their humanity, and boundaries protect my sanity and our relationship. I can have compassion for someone’s pain without making myself responsible for it. I hope this makes sense. It’s helped me suffer less and I hope it does the same for you.
