@ksbw_8: A woman was pushed to the ground during an anti-ICE protest outside the Monterey County Jail in Salinas on Thursday, as demonstrators confronted federal agents at the facility. "I'm like four feet tall; how dangerous can I be?" the woman who was pushed, Lisa Avarro, told KSBW 8. Avarro described the confrontation, saying, “They want to come out here and tell us to move, that we’re obstructing. What are we obstructing? We’re not doing anything. They’re not doing **** sitting in their cars, and then they come and form this line to try to intimidate us. We’re not stepping back.” Witnesses said two vehicles arrived shortly before noon. Later, KSBW saw seven vehicles with tinted windows and no license plates parked on county property. Protesters questioned why so many vehicles were needed to take someone from the jail. “I think they’re trying to intimidate people, to be scared of them. I’m not afraid of them,” Bill Freeman said. An ICE agent said agents were there for three people, whom they described as "illegals." The County of Monterey sent ICE and the Department of Homeland Security a cease-and-desist letter Thursday, demanding that agents stop using county property as a staging area for civil immigration enforcement. "Waiting to hear back from our chain of command on that, the ICE agent told KSBW 8 on the cease-and-desist letter. The county cited reported activity at the jail and three other county sites, and said it was taking legal action to protect public safety and access to county services. “We’re going to continue to take every legal action available to us to maintain the safety of our residents, of all people who live in Monterey County,” County Supervisor Wendy Root Askew said.
