Yes, I work hard AND I have several advantages that make this easier for me than it might be for someone else. Or put another way, I face fewer real-life barriers than many others. Please note that recognizing your lack of obstacles does not take away from the hard work you put in to get to where you are. It’s simply acknowledging that others can have more of an uphill climb than you to get to the same destination, and it might even mean that someone tries harder than you do and still isn’t able to get to where you are due to the barriers they face. As a dual-income no kids (DINK) household individual who works from home with a flexible schedule, is able-bodied with zero health complications, lives in southern California where the weather is (mostly) great year-round and is in a safe neighborhood with lots of walking paths, for whom working out is quite literally part of my job, and has an extremely strong social support system… yes, I definitely have it easier than many others. That’s not a knock on me; it’s simply a recognition of my reality. I don’t experience excessive fatigue just from trying to get out of bed. I don’t have joint pain or any debilitating conditions that make simply living my day-to-day life more difficult. I don’t have little kids to tend to. I have the luxury of both time and resources to devote to exercise that not everyone does. This is not the case for everyone. Yes, I believe in making time for the things that are important to you. I also believe that some people face far more obstacles to doing said things. So while exercising 6+ hours a week, cooking many meals from scratch at home, getting a full 7-9 hours of sleep almost every single night, etc. are very doable for me, an “if I can do it, so can you!” fails to acknowledge that different people face different struggles. Rather than boiling anyone’s current situation down to a mere lack of effort or discipline, let’s recognize that not everyone has the same resources, nor is everyone dealt the same playing cards - and actually provide realistic solutions and workarounds so people can work with what they’ve got. 👏 #Privileges
