i’ve been lying in icebreakers for years. two truths and a lie, first day of a new job, some guy at a party who thinks he’s deep. “what’s your biggest fear?” and i always say heights, with a little laugh, like wow you got me. i don’t even mind heights. i went up a ferris wheel last summer and ate a pretzel. what am i supposed to say though? “well, kevin from accounting, what actually keeps me up is the idea of learning someone’s coffee order, their mom’s birthday, the exact sound of their real laugh, memorizing the way they go quiet when they’re stressed, giving them the version of me nobody else has seen, and then one day hearing them describe the whole thing as ‘just a phase i was in’”? no. i’m saying heights. because i’ve been there. i’ve given someone everything i had, and i don’t mean that in a dramatic way, i mean i rearranged my actual life. i turned down things. i stopped saving anything for myself because i thought that’s what all in meant. i kept every ticket stub. i could tell you what we ate on any given week. and then it ended, and a few months later i found out it hadn’t even been the great love of their life, or the big painful chapter, or anything they talked about much at all. it was just a thing that happened to them once. i think that’s the part that broke me. i could’ve handled being hated. i could’ve handled it being a tragedy. what i couldn’t handle was being a footnote. all of that love going into something and then just evaporating, like i had been pouring water into sand and calling it a garden. so now i do this thing where i keep one foot out the door. i give people about seventy percent and call it having boundaries. and i know that isn’t really healthy, and i know the people i meet now didn’t do anything wrong, they’re just paying for somebody else’s crime. but i’m working on it. i’ve been trying to believe something that’s hard to believe at 2 a.m., which is that love doesn’t become meaningless just because the other person stopped holding it. it changed me. it taught me i can love like that, and not everybody can. what it meant to them was never the only thing it meant. i still get scared. i probably always will. so if you ask, i’ll give you the little laugh and tell you it’s heights. and maybe it is, kind of. i’ve just never been afraid of falling off a building. only of falling for someone again and finding out, all the way at the bottom, that nobody was there to catch me.
