🎄Traditions can evolve without losing their meaning. 🎄 Growing up, the holidays were always busy, and food was often a source of stress. When I was very little, we had traditional holiday meals. Eventually, my family shifted to having each person choose a dish, hoping that would make things easier. But with my ARFID, holiday meals were still stressful. Over time, our traditions evolved. We started celebrating our small family Christmas on Christmas Eve, and to reduce conflict and stress surrounding food, we began making homemade pizza. 🍕 Eventually, that tradition carried over to Christmas with my dad’s extended family. Instead of a traditional holiday dinner, we ordered pizza! My aunts always brought Christmas cookies, candies, and cheesecake. ❤️ Those extended family Christmas celebrations became some of my absolute favorite holiday memories. 💚 We had such a large family that we celebrated Christmas in a school gymnasium because we couldn’t comfortably fit everyone into someone’s house. We exchanged gifts, played basketball and wiffle ball, laughed, and spent time together. ❤️ What made those holidays so special wasn’t the food. It was that food wasn’t the focus. 💚 There wasn’t an expectation that everyone needed to eat the same meal or participate in the same food traditions. We could simply enjoy being together. I share this because sometimes families feel obligated to preserve traditions exactly as they’ve always been, even when those traditions create unnecessary stress for someone with ARFID. Accommodating someone’s eating needs doesn’t mean sacrificing the holiday experience. Sometimes, changing a tradition makes it possible for everyone to participate more comfortably. Accommodations don’t have to mean abandoning recovery goals or avoiding opportunities for growth. There is a time and place for challenging ourselves, and not every holiday gathering needs to become a food exposure. Looking back, I don’t feel like I missed out because we weren’t eating turkey, ham, or all the traditional holiday dishes. I remember the pizza, the basketball games, the gift exchanges, the laughter, and being surrounded by family. The traditions changed, but the meaning of Christmas didn’t. Sometimes the most meaningful holiday traditions are the ones we create when we make room for everyone’s needs. ❄️
