🌋 Why is Iceland one of the most geologically active places on Earth? 🇮🇸🌍 Iceland is quite literally being pulled apart! The island sits directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a divergent tectonic plate boundary where the North American and Eurasian plates are slowly moving away from one another at around 2 cm per year. As these plates separate, hot mantle rock rises beneath the surface and partially melts, generating magma that can erupt to form new volcanic rock. 🌋 But there’s something else that makes Iceland particularly special… 🔥 A mantle plume! Iceland also sits above an area of unusually hot mantle, often referred to as the Iceland hotspot. This provides an additional supply of magma, helping explain why Iceland has so much volcanic activity and why the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rises above sea level here. The result? A landscape shaped by volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, geothermal activity, lava fields and the continuous creation of new crust. And the incredible thing is that we’re watching geological processes that normally happen deep beneath the Atlantic Ocean taking place right in front of us! Iceland is one of the best places on Earth to see plate tectonics in action. 🌍 #scottishgeologist #geology #iceland
