Sorrow? An apology? Reparations? How should the UK make amends for its legacy of slavery? The prime minister, Andy Burnham, has pledged a “new approach” with Commonwealth countries whose people were enslaved by the UK, offering the opportunity for the affected African and Caribbean countries to help shape the wording of an official apology. He announced the approach at a summit in Antigua this week, but says the UK will not pay reparations because British people should not be held responsible for centuries-old crimes. How should the UK account for this devastating history, which has caused widespread racial inequalities that exist to this day? The Guardian's political correspondent Aletha Adu explains why an apology may only be the beginning.
