I say some of you need to take your basic theory and if you are driving stop driving. Let me go through the facts. Yesterday morning in Punggol, a Grab autonomous shuttle was making a left turn. A schoolgirl stepped onto the crossing while the green man was on. To me the vehicle kept the same speed through the turn. It only tapped the brakes after it had already passed her. She had to jump back. Under Singapore’s Road Traffic rules, a turning vehicle must stop for any pedestrian who is crossing or starting to cross. Doesn’t matter if they were looking at their phone or playing before they stepped out. That’s Rule 4. Clear and non-negotiable. Rule 5 also says you must approach a crossing only at a speed that allows you to stop immediately. Maintaining the same speed until after you’ve already gone past the pedestrian is not how it’s done. If this was a human driver, it would be failing to give way to a pedestrian — 6 demerit points and around $200 fine. The rules don’t change just because the vehicle is autonomous.
