The way this is becoming India vs. Nepal in the comments and people completely missing the point; I’m a white American woman and I’ve been treated well by both Indian and Nepalese men. But I’m not an idiot and I don’t shut my eyes to it, violence against women is a huge issue in the South Asian community. Just a couple of months ago there was a 3 year old girl assaulted and k*lled by two teen boys, in Nepal. Nepal has a huge issue of women and girls being trafficked. Everyday I get on social media and see news of women and girls being assaulted and/or k*lled in India (the stories from India seem to get more social media attention). Just in the last few months, there was a woman k*lled by her brother in law because she didn’t cook when or what he wanted, in laws don’t get dowries they want and become abusive, or they treat daughter in laws like their servants and abuse them. I was around 22 when Jyoti Singh was beaten and SA’d so violently that she died from her injuries. That case was so gruesome that it made American news. The conversation is long overdue. Before anyone says it, yes it happens here in the US with white American men too, we can talk about that next. But let’s be honest, a case of a woman that looks like me being hurt, gets a lot more attention nationally/globally than a woman that looks like Mamta. And that’s all the more reason to talk about it.
