1. I sat in a government waiting room for two hours last week, ticket number in hand, and never once checked the digital display counting up toward my number. People around me checked it constantly, sighing, muttering, watching it like a pot they were willing to boil faster through sheer attention. I simply sat there instead, ticket resting loosely in my hand. 2. Watching the number doesn't make it climb any faster, and I think most of us know that somewhere, even while we keep watching anyway. The watching isn't really about the number at all. It's about needing to feel like we're doing something, anything, rather than simply being where we currently are, waiting the way waiting actually requires. 3. A man near me, clearly frustrated, asked how I could sit so still without checking, as if I somehow knew something he didn't about how long this would take. I told him I didn't know anything he didn't. I'd simply decided two hours was two hours either way, and I'd rather spend it sitting calmly than spend it watching a number refuse to hurry. 4. Next time you're forced to wait somewhere with a visible counter or clock — a line, an appointment, a loading screen — try not checking it at all for as long as you can manage. Notice the urge to look, and let it pass without obeying it. See what the waiting feels like when you stop measuring it constantly. 5. I wonder how much of our waiting we spend anxiously measuring instead of actually experiencing, checking the clock as if it might move faster for our attention.
