Uber eats killed my relationship with “bossman” at the kebab shop. It will not be forgiven

Relationships are inconvenient. But that’s like the whole point. It’s giving of yourself for another person, and them giving to you. The inconvenience of that is the best part.

As long as I’m not massively out of the way I’ll always offer lifts for friends. Let me drive you as it’s a good opportunity to catch up and often is nice company for me

My wife, housemate, and I all travel several times a year, often solo (for work). I think in the last 5 years someone’s needed to take an uber once? because even if it means staying up late or waking up early, we’ve got each other’s backs. It’s a tough world, largely designed by those in power to keep us isolated and tired. Building and maintaining human connections is absolutely an act of resistance!

The pub is a great leveller for this, a good pub is really good at it. Also, you can put yourself out with no shame if rejected.

I’m glad I live in a city small enough that uber isn’t a thing here

Could not agree more! I also wanted to add; the forced perception by capitalism that, to spend time with someone, is a situation where you have to spend money. You have to go shopping, you have to go to a cafe, you have to go to the cinema, or out to dinner. I know walking around the same lake or forest can get old, but I feel more and more cities are whittling down their public spaces for more and more paid services and places to “hang out”, but with a burden of having to pay to stay.

100% my friendships are just like this still with a handful of people and that’s all I need. We spend time when we can, we ask each other for support when we can and it’s how it should be 🙌🏻

It’s definitely not a new concept, look at how our lives are different to our parents and their parents. We’ve been been trying to make things quicker and easier and more convenient since the Industrial Revolution. I think COVID and social media played a part too, why do I need to ask someone how they are doing when I can see myself type thing.

I fell into the trap of not wanting to inconvenience others and became hyper independent (typed this and then you said it) and alone. I'm trying to get back into the world.

if i need something, my dnd group are usually the first people I ask unless I know a) everyone is already busy or b) I know someone else is better suited to help me with that thing specifically. having that small group of reliable people has probably kept me more sane than anything else in this world has.

My friends always ‘burned’ me with their lives but it’s a burden I gladly take because if they can travel through life a little lighter by me sharing the load with them then I’ve done my job as a friend, if I don’t then why are we even friends? 🤷♂️

I’m proud to say my friend group still asks/offers rides regularly. Case in point, one friend (lawyer) has a court case in a city 90 minutes away go from virtual to in person at 10am for noon. Calls other friend (engineer) and gets driven up. (Admittedly gas money, lunch, etc was paid for)
